Success Stories
Face
We have a gelding with a bald face. It used to sun burn very badly unless we kept it coated with a sun screen, but since we have been feeding our mineral free choice, he has quit sun burning. I know that this can be a problem so really hope that this works for all sunburn areas on any horse.
Feed
The first thing we learned about our mineral when we first got it was that we saved money on feed. Because the minerals are chelated, the nutrients in the feed that we feed our horses are much more available to the horses system . We had our stallions in the condition that we wanted them to be in for breeding season and when we started with the mineral, they started to gain weight. We found that we could drop back between a quarter and a third on the amount we were feeding to maintain the same condition. This represented quite a neat savings.
We didn’t pay a lot of attention to the savings with the hay. We knew we could feed less in the barn, but didn’t try to track on the horses more or less eating free choice. So we were really interested in this following story. A lady said that they found a significant savings feeding hay free choice. They had the same horses and bought the hay from the same man for two different winters, so they had quite a controlled test, and were happy with the savings. It seems that if the horses get the nutrients that they need they are much more satisfied and aren’t looking for more all the time.
Since then a man with his mares on our mineral and free choice hay has told us he also notices that they eat quite a bit less hay.
We are finding a great savings in the winter time with our geldings. They just run on winter graze and eat free choice mineral and are looking great. Of course, if we were using them, the scenario would be quite a bit different.
A friend of ours who lives out in southeastern Alberta told us that last year he ran out of pasture because of the drought condition . At the end of the summer when he weaned, he said the mares were shiny and, while not fat, they were not thin either, and the colts looked just great. He said that our mineral helped him through, what might have been , a trying time.
We are finding that feeding EquiGlo (food grade milled flax) with our mineral is another good way to keep your horses in condition. You need to feed very little and it delivers a more steady energy level to the horse. The cost is reasonable and because of the lack of the high level of starches that you get with grain, there are less incidents of colic and founder.
We have also found that in situations where we want to get a horse to eat more mineral, it helps to add a little EquiGlo in with the mineral.
We have fed our mineral both top dressing and free choice, and find that the best results are seen when we let the horse decide how much he needs through free choice. When we were top dressing, because we were seeing SOME results we would get stingy with it, and later found that we were missing many of the benefits.
Foals
I suppose that the biggest thing we and our customers have noticed with the foals is that they are generally born straight and stay that way. I’ve mentioned this earlier, but it is worth repeating, there are many folks who have had their mares and foals on Hoffman’s Horse Mineral since we had it put together and in that seven years have not experienced any more leg problems . Joints are clean and solid.
The next big thing we hear is that the people’s foals now look, in their yearling year, more like their two year olds used to look. The people telling us this have their broodmares on Hoffman’s and follow right through with the foals after weaning, keeping them on mineral over the winter also. Doing this builds strong bones and ligaments and has an awful lot to do with having a sound horse when he is mature, with joints that can stand the pressures of performing.
People also really enjoy the way their babies look. Their coats are shiny and they tell us that they have a presence about them that was lacking before they started feeding Hoffman’s Horse Mineral to their babies.
They also don’t tend to get that moth eaten gutty look along about the end of July , but keep a nice appearance over the whole summer.
The foals are usually somewhat bigger in the fall. We feel that the mares milk is probably richer and therefore the foal gets better fed. Also the foals start eating the mineral with their moms so get added nutrition that way Plus the chelated minerals help them to utilize more of the nutrients that they are getting from the grass.
Foals get a good start in life on Hoffman's Horse Mineral. We have one neat story about a gal who moved up to northern Alberta from Southern Alberta. The program she used in the south was not working and she said that the best she could say was that they looked, as other have told us, moth eaten and gutty when she weaned them. She worked in a U.F.A. and as she was walking out to go home one evening she noticed our mineral display and thought that maybe she could try it with these less than perfect colts. At this time her girl friend came and they were looking at the colts. Two months after she started feeding our mineral, her girl friend came again. When they went to look at the colts this time , the girl friend looked over the fence and exclaimed," Man, those are sure nice looking colts. What did you do with the other ones that you had?"
Check the “Breeding Mares” section for further stories on foals.
Hooves
The first we knew about the effects of Hoffman’s Horse Mineral on hooves was when our farrier asked Lorne what he was doing different with his feeding program. Lorne told him he was feeding this new mineral and asked why he wanted to know. He said that the hooves on our horses had become the best hooves that he works on, on his circuit. He has since been recommending it to any of his customers with hoof problems.
A lady also told us that she had a gelding with a quarter crack right up to the hair line. She said they had put everything on and in the horse that was recommended, at considerable expense, with almost no results. They started feeding Hoffman’s Horse Mineral and when I talked to her eight months later, the crack had almost completely grown out.
Another lady told me a similar story. They went to buy an eighteen year old Arab mare, but when they looked at her she had a quarter crack, and they were hesitating. The farrier happened to be there and he told them that the mare had, had that crack at least for the seven years that he had been shoeing her and had always stayed sound. They decided to buy her. Shortly after that they went to one of our seminars and decided to start feeding their horses our mineral. I saw her five months later and she told me that the crack was starting to fill right in. She said we had sure made a believer out of her.
Our neighbor has a thoroughbred mare that had thin shelly walls on her hooves and they had to keep her shod all the time or she would go lame. Since they have been feeding Hoffman’s Horse Mineral, she can run bare foot and not go lame.
In general the hooves stay more pliable and don’t tend to crack as easily.
Joints
This is a biggy when it comes to feeding Hoffman’s Horse Mineral. As mentioned under the broodmare section, it does wonders for the joints on foals making them solid and clean, but beyond that it has had some wonderful results on older horses . Check under Arthritic Horses for those results and then consider the following.
One family has a gelding that was going lame on them. It had been diagnosed as navicular , but I don’t know if x-rays etc. were done. Anyway they used him in some local shows for their kids to ride, but had to bute him to do it. After spending the winter on our mineral, he was shown all last summer with no sign of lameness.
Another lady told us that when she started feeding our mineral her gelding had a pretty good wind puff on a back hock. This wind puff disappeared, but I am not sure how long it took. However, it was only a matter of months.
Trainers tell us that they also appreciate the soundness that our mineral promotes in their horses. They say that they have a lot less incidents of joint and tendon soreness and outright lameness than they did before feeding Hoffman’s. Many of the top trainers in Alberta have their horses on it.
Muscles
While Hoffman’s Horse Mineral promotes good joints and tendons, it also has a positive effect on a horses’ muscles.
Horses that have just performed sometimes will have their muscles tighten up ,but when they are on our mineral, this situation tends to be alleviated.
Also, our mineral has a very positive effect on horses that are having trouble with muscles tying up. One lady told me that she was going to sell her horse because he tied up every time she tried to perform him. Her girl friend said that she had heard that Hoffman’s Horse Mineral was very good for horses and why not try that before she sent her otherwise perfectly good horse to the canners. Well, she did and when I talked to her six months later, he hadn’t tied up on her again.
Sickness
Basically, we have found that we no longer have problems with sickness. Feeding Hoffman’s Horse Mineral builds the immunity system and gives the horse a high degree of protection. In the years since we have been feeding our mineral, we haven’t had a sick horse, and that is no small thing. The last year that we bred mares, a mare brought the strangles in and we just figured that some of our six stallions would get it, because they were young and had never been out showing and given a chance to build an immunity. But not one horse that had been on our mineral got sick.
People who use our mineral and show their horses, really appreciate the fact that it has caused their vet bills to drop quite noticeably, due to the down turn in the number of sick or lame horses. The horses they are showing don’t get sick and they don’t drag it home to those horses either.
We have only had one incidence of colic in the eight seasons that we have had Hoffman’s Horse Mineral, and that was our own fault. We put a hungry horse in where there was some old, junky hay. Not smart!
We have also had a couple of people tell us that their horses recovered from serious illness much faster when they put them on our mineral.
Stamina
Stamina is one of the results of using our mineral that the reiners and working cowhorse people really like. It gives the horse more bottom so that he can go through the performance without running out of steam, and also helps him haul without getting so tired and go through long stretches of showing without drawing up and losing weight. This is another area where it is also very beneficial to feed EquiGlo (food grade milled flax). It also helps to keep weight and energy up on show horses, when combined with Hoffman’s Horse Mineral..
A lady who was taking her horse to a big Paint Horse show in Fort Worth in July, was told several things to do to keep the horse going , through the heat. He was on our mineral and she said that in the end they needed to do very little and that the horse was rested and ready to go right to the end. She wished the same could have been said about the owners.
Many people don’t use their horses a lot, and then when they do, can ride them quite hard. The horses often sweat profusely and tire very quickly. One trail rider told us that this had been the case, especially when they first went to the mountains in the spring, but the year they started feeding Hoffman’s, they noticed a big difference in both the amount of sweat (almost none) and the amount of stamina. They usually picked a short first ride because the horses tired easily, but after this particular ride the horses were still ready to go.
Ulcers
People that study such things tell us that 80% of horses that race have ulcers at some time. Bleeding from the nose is also a problem with race horses. We are not into the racing scene, but understand that both of these can be quite serious problems. We talked to one race horse man who told us that in the year and a half that he had been feeding Hoffman’s Horse Mineral he had not had a bleeder, and had, had problems previously. Hoffman's Horse Mineral has also had a benificial effect on the ulcers.
We feel that when a horses’ nutrition is right, there are elements of it that calms a horse and helps them handle stressful situations.
Weight Problems
There are horses that have problems keeping weight on, and others that have problems putting it on after they have been sick or hurt.
We met one man who had several thoroughbreds that he was having quite a problem with. He said although he was doing everything he could think of, he was ashamed of his horses and certainly didn’t want any one to see them. He put them on Hoffman’s and EquiGlo( food grade milled flax) and I called him about two months later to see what was happening. He was happy, in fact, so happy that he said any time we wanted to refer people to him, he would be glad to talk to them. We have had other people also report marked improvement in the weight on their horses.
One of those people was boarding an eighteen year old Arab gelding. They and the owners were doing everything they could think of to put weight on him. He had a huge hay belly, all the vertebrae were showing, his hair coat was rough and he even looked weak as he was wobbling. We suggested that they start feeding a cup of Hoffman’s Horse mineral and a cup of EquiGlo per day. In three weeks they were seeing a change in his coat and soon after could notice that he was putting on weight, but soon felt that he still needed to gain more. At this point they upped the EquiGlo to two cups and about a month after that the owners sold him to another person. No one would have bought him when we first saw him!!
A lady called us to thank us for putting our mineral out. She said she had bought a two year old filly, and, I think it was after she bought her that she discovered she was in foal. Then, the filly had an accident and ran a stick in her stomach. They took her to the vet for treatment, but because of the site of the injury she got infection and became very sick. They had to give her massive doses of medication and the vet said if she, herself, lived she would very likely lose her colt, or at the very least, he would have something drastically wrong with him. This lady told us that once the infection subsided, the mare started to heal and gain strength quite rapidly, and that she was still in foal. They looked forward to that foal with very mixed feelings, not knowing what it would be like. On the day he was born, these people were thrilled to death. The foal was perfect except for the fact that he had a spot on his face with no hair. She said that she really believed that without the mare being on our mineral, the results would have been very different.
Closing
Over the years that we have had Hoffman's Horse Mineral, it has come under some fairly intense scrutiny. Several nutritionists have checked it out including a renowned nutritionist from Quincy, Illinois. Our own veterinarian has endorsed it and also recommends it for her customers horses. A feed specialist from Weatherford, Texas checked out a sample sent to him by one of our customers, and his conclusion was that it is ( in his words) a Cadillac mineral. We also have a number of veterinarians selling it now. Also, we know a certified equine massage therapist who prescribes Hoffman's Horse Mineral for her clients.
